Broodthaers. Or The Interaction Between Word, Language, Text And Art

Leci n'est pas un sèrie de conferences sur Marcel Broodthaers. Although this series begins and ends with him it is not always about Broodthaers. Six individuals with an inclination to art as well as to language dwell upon interactions between the two, either in their own practises or in those of artists they admire. We dedicated the sum of their contributions to Broodthaers, in whose works language tells us about art and art tells us about language.
Broodthaers initially a poet, wrote about his first act as a visual artist: ‘I, too, wondered if I couldn't sell something and succeed in life. For quite a while I had been good for nothing. I am forty years old [...] The idea of inventing something insincere finally crossed my mind, and I set to work at once. At the end of three months I showed what I had produced to Philippe Edouard Toussaint, the owner of the Galerie Saint-Laurent. "But it is Art," he said, and I shall willingly exhibit all of it." "Agreed", I replied [...] If I sell something, he takes 30%. It seems these are the usual conditions, some galleries take 75%. What is it? In fact it's objects." '
These subversive words became his most often quoted. Broodthaers' aspiration to visualize how society deals with art, how context and meaning bear upon each other is still of importance to younger artists who want to develop art in oppostion to
the power structures of market and institutions. The interaction between art and language is always right in the heart of that matter.

Moderated by Ilse van Rijn. Ilse van Rijn is a writer and art critic living in Amsterdam. Besides writing articles for, among others, Metropolis M, Open and Mister Motley, she is particularly interested in collaborative projects with artists, editors, curators which question her role as a writer and the material (words, sentences, text, language) she uses. Van Rijn is a theory teacher at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie.
