Lucifer. Or The Temptation Of Evil

Lucifer. Or The Temptation Of Evil

Paradoxically, in Latin the word Lucifer means "bringer of light" and refers to the morning star (the planet Venus in its dawn appearances), whereas it is also a name for Satan. In Christian belief and Muslim tradition Lucifer, who was one of the archangels, rebelled against God because he refused to bow down to mankind after the creation of man. Therefore he and his followers were expelled from heaven and condemned to a life on earth. Ever since he is the cause of all evil that strikes mankind. Today evil is a word that stands for all the misfortunes man can be confronted with. In fact, we use the word for everything that disturbs our feeling of harmony and peace: sickness, violence, discomfort, death, disaster and bad luck. We can be the victim of evil occurrences, but we also do evil ourselves. In other words, evil is also a moral concept that indicates what is unjust and forbidden. Moral guidelines however are anything but objective and uni-versal, and it has always been very tempting to eat of forbidden fruits. If anything is really universal it is the fascination for the evil.
This lecture series offers a multi-disciplinary approach to Evil and it will focus on the representations of evil in literature, popular culture, opera and the fine arts. A more direct confrontation with the offenders of terrible crimes and with their psychology and circumstances also forms part of the series. Ultimately, only a limited number of aspects can be addressed in these lectures, for the realm of dark-
ness is infinite.
